The Irish Sport Horse Studbook (ISH) has reclaimed 1st position in the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses’ eventing studbook rankings.
The studbook had won the eventing rankings every year since the conception of the rankings in 1994 up until 2010 when they finished in second to the Hannovarian studbook and in 2011 when they took 3rd place after the Selle Français and Hanoverian studbooks.
This year however, the Irish Sport Horse studbook never looked in doubt of winning the eventing rankings and ultimately finished on 1,427 points, over 100 points higher than the Hanoverian studbook, and 355 points ahead of the Holstein studbook who finished in 3rd place.

Prevalent at the Olympics
The Irish Sport Horse Studbook was very prevalent in eventing at the London Olympic Games 2012 with thirteen ISH horses representing seven different nations beginning the first phase. Following cross country on day two the ISH horses began to climb the ranks with Imperial Cavalier and High Kingdom moving into top ten positions. A nail-biting individual final in the showjumping phase resulted in a total of four ISH horses claiming top ten positions overall; 5th Imperial Cavalier (Mary King/GBR), 7th Master Crusoe (Aoife Clark/IRL), 8th High Kingdom (Zara Phillips/GBR) and 9th Mr Medicott (Karen O’Connor/USA). This is twice the number of Irish Sport Horses who finished in the top ten in eventing at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.

Mr Medicott tops the individual ranking
In addition to winning the WBFSH eventing studbook rankings, the studbook received a further boost with the ISH gelding Mr Medicott, ridden by US event rider Karen O’Connor, taking first place in the individual eventing rankings.  Bred by Dr Donal Geaney in Castleisland, Co. Kerry, Mr Medicott is by the ISH stallion Cruising and out of Slieveluachra (ISH) by the thoroughbred stallion Edmund Burke.  Mr. Medicott and Karen O’Connor (USA) had an extremely successful year in 2012 which included finishing in 4th place in the 2012 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day and in 9th place in the individual eventing at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
- The Irish Sport Horse is world renowned for eventing and we are delighted to be back on top of the WBFSH rankings. It is also a welcome development that this year two out of the six Irish Sport Horses that contributed to the studbooks victory in the rankings were ridden by Irish riders, Sarah Ennis (IRL) and Capt. Geoff Curran (IRL) of the Army Equitation School, commented chairman of HSI, Mr. Joe Walsh.
This week there is a very strong contingent of 28 Irish Sport Horses competing at the WBFSH world championships for 6- and 7-year-old eventing horses at Le Lion d’Angers in France.
