Bred by Willy Wijnen, Explositon W (Chacco-Blue - Untouchable x Baloubet du Rouet) has been competing under the saddle of Britain’s Ben Maher for three years now, and has recorded unbelieveable performances already for a 10-year-old horse.

With no fewer than eight victories at 1m60 in 2019 alone, Explosion is showing incredible talent for top-level sport, and contributed to Great Britain’s jumping team securing their Olympic qualification for Tokyo 2020. Similarly, the pair won the Global Champions Tour overall title following their win in the New York Grand Prix.

Willy Wijnen is pleased to talk about his breeding line, and about being honoured by the WBFSH: “This is just unbelievable, one of the best moment you can achieve as a breeder. I have now been breeding for 35 years with this line. It started with Barina (Sultan - Olgarina x Epigoon), from the same dam line as Grand Prix dressage horse Ideaal (Doruto) ridden by Gonnelien Rothenberger. I used this line for producing jumping horses and dressage horses, including the promising KWPN dressage stallion Imposantos who also traces back to the same granddam as Explosion W.

Baloubet de Rouet, something special!

“There is a lot of sport coming from this line. Barina was advanced level dressage and jumped at 1m20, so she could do both and also passed these same abilities on to her offspring. She was competing in between giving birth to her foals. In total she gave 17 foals, and was sometimes also in front of a carriage, and we were hacking her in the woods. I have a book about her including all her children, grandchildren, etc. She was an unbelievably strong and healthy mare. All the horses from this line are hot like Barina, and they all have very strong conformation. They are true athletes with elasticity, and most of them are good to handle. Explosion W’s mother was not so easy, and Explosion W himself was not so easy in the beginning and stayed with me until he was seven years old. My neighbour, Marielle de Veer, completed his education and had lots of possibilities with me. I told her that she can ride as many jump offs as she wants with him, but let’s do it on our way. If you want to win 20 or 25 euros I will simply give it to you.

“I used Baloubet du Rouet for Barina because I saw him once in France when he stood with Nelson Pessoa. I always thought Baloubet du Rouet was something special when ridden by Rodrigo Pessoa: always jumping with phenomenal ease. I did, however, have a problem with how Baloubet du Rouet was built, but the Sultan mare, Barina, was very correct and could compensate for what Baloubet was missing. Untouchable also had a lot of talent for jumping, but the biggest problem was always the last fence, because she became so hot and eager that she forgot how to jump.

“So then I saw Chacco-Blue one time at a show in Aachen or in Neumünster, and I had also seen some of his offspring. He wasn’t the prettiest stallion, but he really sparked some interest in me. I couldn’t get him out of my mind, and at that time he was not as popular as he is now.

“I now have Implosion W (Chacco-Blue) from a different line, and I think he’s an outstanding horse, too.  The quality of this line is that they all have top character and also have blood. Explosion jumped with Marielle at 1m30 and 1m35 and they had about 25 double clears. He is still very careful. After all these good results a lot of people came to me and were asking about him. I selected a few people that I thought could be interesting and then Ben Maher crossed our path, coming to try Explosion W in our riding school. First Marielle rode him, but when Ben got on him he transformed into a completely different horse. The canter and athletic possibilities that Explosion W showed with Ben, and is still showing, is not normal.

“I am now only breeding with mares that are tracing back to Barina, I keep four or five broodmares, two for jumping and two for dressage.”

Here’s how Ben Maher describes Explosion W: “He jumped amazingly in Rotterdam [European championships]. Sometimes he is so careful that I have to give him more pressure. I bought him from the breeders when he was seven years old and they also spent all week in Rotterdam. For the first year my stable riders were riding him, then I took over two years ago. He has an incredible clear-round ratio. I am very lucky that his owners are letting me ride such an amazing horse.”
