EVA - Equine Viral Arteritis
|

Information about EVA, Vilhelmsborg August 2008
|
Dear members and associates,
EVA has been known since 1953. In general EVA infection occurs without or with mild clinical signs, like fever, oedema of lower limbs, scrotum or mammary glands. Abortion occurs in 40-80 % of affected mares at any time during pregnancy. EVA does not persist in mares, but can persist in stallions. Between 30-70% of stallions will be persistently infected. Those stallions will shed the virus in their semen.
Different diagnostic methods excits for EVA, but these are not harmonized. This means that the same stallion can be tested positive in one country and negative in another. As warmblood stallions are now used worldwide, it is very important that the tests are done in the same way.
One of the tasks at the WBFSH annual plan 2008 has therefore been to harmonize the EVA tests.
According to the Commission regulation (EC) No. 180/2008 of 28 February 2008 (enclosed) the french govermental laboratory AFSSA (Agence Francaise de Sécurité Sanitaire des Aliments) has been appointed as the European Communautary laboratory of reference on the 1st. of July 2008, for 5 years.
The WBFSH Board and Executive had a meeting with Dr. Aymeric Hans, Head of the Virology Department at AFSSA. He would like to set up the network of National Reference Laboratories. For that we need your help: the WBFSH would therefore kindly ask you to inform AFSSA about the reference laboratory for EVA in your country asap on e-mail: a.hans@dozule.afssa.fr

EVA Workshop Conclusion November 2007
|
During the WBFSH Annual Meetings in Apeldoorn on 4 – 7 November, 2007, 3 workshops were arranged.
Pleae find below the listed conclusions regarding EVA:
1. Now we understand that results can differ (due to biological variation). 2. Good plan that EU will start one reference lab. 3. Good to know that some countries already have reference labs. 4. WBFSH will put effort into having contact with labs and stimulate mutual contact.
